Three Degrees °

We recently began utilizing a three-tier classification system for our wines – Basic, Premium and Top. To further showcase the steep- and steepest-slope viticulture we hold so dear to our hearts, we assigned each tier a slope incline degree – 12°, 36°and 50°. These represent the average inclines of the respecting vineyards.

Our Basic wines emphasize the typical characteristics of the Moselle Region: approachable dry to fruity Rieslings. Our collection is complemented by the “Madeleine,” an antagonist to the classic Moselle Riesling. It is produced from a rather young but very rare grape variety with low acidity and represents one of our winery’s so-called “unique selling propositions” or “USPs.”

We attribute the special quality and character of these Premier wines to the first-class slopes, all either ERTSE LAGE® or GROSSE LAGE®, upon which the grapes grow on and the precise work with spontaneous fermentation that takes place in our cellars. The minerality of the Moselle soil is fully present in these wines.

We produce our Top wines from extremely low yields of specially selected grapes growing on the smallest and steepest slopes in our portfolio. Very careful work by our winemaker, spontaneous fermentation, and good acid refining, combined with lengthy aging (including periodic yeast agitation), give the wines a special smoothness and a perfectly integrated acidity. Year after year, they produce limited-batch Rieslings with exceptional character and pronounced aging potential.
